Daisy

I slide into the booth and wave as Bella walks into the restaurant. Jasmine will be here any minute, and I can’t wait to introduce my friends to each other. They’ll want an update on Grayson, and I’m excited about that too.

Bella slides in next to me. “This place smells amazing. Is it weird that I’m now craving a steak?”

“Craving?” With eyebrows lifted, I stare at her.

She bites her lip. “Only Javi knows.”

“Bella!” My whisper doesn’t come out as soft as I planned. “I’m so happy for you.”

She leans into my hug. “We’re really excited.”

Only six months ago, my friend flitted off to Vegas to tie the knot, and since then, she’s been the happiest I’ve ever seen. Javi loves her and has made that clear since the first time they met.

I give her another squeeze. “I can’t wait to shop for baby clothes. You know I’m going to totally spoil this kid, right?”

“I expect nothing less.” She picks up the menu. “It’s a bit of a surprise. We planned to wait longer, but it’s a good surprise.”

“A very good surprise.” I smile as Jasmine walks toward the table. “My friend is here.”

“Hi.” Jasmine sets her bag down, then slides in across from Bella and me. “Sorry I’m a few minutes late.”

“Sorry I skipped class today. I didn’t have anything else planned. I just spent the day reading and doing nothing.”

“It’s okay to skip. Unless you’re teaching. They frown on me ditching class.” Jasmine sticks out her hand. “You must be Bella.”

“Yes. I’m so sorry. Bella, this is Jasmine. I met her when I tried out that yoga studio. And this is Bella. We’ve been friends forever, and she probably knows me better than anyone. But I made her promise not to make me look bad.”

Bella shakes her head. “Not possible. It’s nice to meet you, Jasmine.”

The waitress walks up, and we all order drinks and food, then Bella leans forward and folds her hands on the table. “I’ve been patient, but now you need to tell us about how things are going with Grayson.”

“He asked me out. Finally. And I’m pretty sure it was because he thought his friend might invite me to the wedding, but the reason isn’t important.”

Jasmine’s jaw falls open. “He invited you to a wedding?”

“He did, which means I’ll get to see him all dressed up.” A lot of brain energy has been eaten up thinking about Grayson in a suit. “Because he’s shy, it’s been hard to get a read on him, to know if he really likes me. But after last night, I know he likes me. And not just because he asked me out.”

He was his usual quiet self, but when we said good night, he responded to my welcoming head tilt and inviting smile with the most delicious of kisses. I still get flutters when I think about it.

Bella wiggles her fingers as if that will draw out my reasons. “Tell us.”

“When he walked me to my car at the end of the night, I invited him over for dinner.
